Political convictions

These are the political ideas with which you firmly believe and with which you identify.

A person cannot discriminate or harass you because of your political convictions. The Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms prohibits anyone to:

  • treat you differently because of your political convictions
  • make offensive and repeated comments to you related to your political convictions
  • behave repeatedly in an offensive manner towards you in relation to your political convictions
For example, you cannot be denied access to a business or a restaurant because you are wearing a political symbol such as a pin, a badge or a sticker.
This video presents the topic of political convictions in American Sign Language (ASL)

Do you believe you are being discriminated against or harassed because of your political convictions?

The Commission can help you recognize discrimination or harassment and take action to prevent or stop discriminatory behaviour.

Discrimination for belonging to a political party

Claudine has been working as a hospital HR consultant for 25 years. She is valued for her expertise and her many qualities. Even though she never talks about it, her colleagues know that she is a member of a political party. When her manager retired, Claudine applied for the position. Management advised her let someone “more neutral” take the position. The company is not allowed to treat Claudine differently because of her affiliation with a political party. This is discrimination on the basis of political convictions.
